What is DBT? Dialectical Behavior Therapy Explained
If you struggle with overwhelming emotions, impulsive behaviors, or intense conflict in your relationships, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) might be the perfect fit for you.
Originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT has since been proven highly effective for a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and PTSD. It is a specialized form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that focuses heavily on teaching practical skills.
What does "Dialectical" mean?
The word dialectical refers to the integration of opposites. In DBT, the central dialectic is Acceptance vs. Change. A DBT therapist will help you radically accept yourself and your current situation exactly as it is, while simultaneously pushing you to make positive changes and learn new behaviors.
The Four Pillars of DBT
DBT is famous for its skills training, which is broken down into four main modules:
- Mindfulness: The foundation of DBT. It teaches you how to be fully present in the current moment without judgment, rather than getting lost in regrets about the past or worries about the future.
- Distress Tolerance: How to survive a crisis without making it worse. Instead of using destructive coping mechanisms (like self-harm, substance use, or lashing out), you learn techniques to tolerate intense emotional pain.
- Emotion Regulation: Strategies to understand, identify, and manage your emotions. You learn how to decrease your vulnerability to negative emotions and increase positive emotional experiences.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness: How to assert your needs, say no, and manage conflict while maintaining respect for yourself and your relationships.
Is DBT right for me?
If you often feel like your emotions are a rollercoaster that you can't control, or if you find yourself acting impulsively when you are upset, the structured, skill-building approach of DBT can be life-changing.
